Star Trek has been around for nearly 45 years, and the characters are popular Halloween costumes to this day. The Star Trek movie that came out in 2009 has certainly helped, but even before that, you would see Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock and many other characters every Halloween. Let's look at some of the things to consider when planning a Star Trek Halloween costume.
First, you'll need to decide which of the many Star Trek shows and movies you want to choose from. The original series is always popular, as is The Next Generation, but you might want something a little less obvious, like Deep Space Nine, Voyager or Enterprise. Or maybe one of the many movies, such as Wrath of Khan. Each has its own characters and styles that make them a little different from one another.
Once you've chosen the inspiration for your character, you can decide if you want to be someone specific, such as Captain Picard or Mr. Spock, or a more generic character like the typical "red shirt" who often doesn't make it back from the landing parties.
Certain characters will require specific accessories, such as Spock's ears or Captain Picard's bald head, but many others can be created by using a fairly generic uniform. Just make sure you add some little touch that will help the real "Trekkies" identify your costume.
You can either rent or buy your costume. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, and it will depend on what you want to accomplish which is the better choice. Renting a costume won't necessarily save you any money, in fact it can sometimes cost more than buying one. Because costume rental shops often supply costumes for commercials, stage plays and other productions, they tend to have better quality than many costume stores will sell. You may pay more for these costumes, but the quality tends to be much higher and more true to the original.
If you plan to buy your costume, you've got a couple of choices. You could buy it locally, from either a costume shop or another store that sells costumes at Halloween, or you could buy it on the internet, from costume websites like CostumeDiscounters.com.
You'll generally find a better selection if you buy it online, and often the prices are better as well. Just make sure the website offer a good return or exchange guarantee, since you can't try them on before you order. Every costume manufacturer's sizes are a little different, so it may even be a good idea to order three - the size you normally wear plus one size up and one size down. Then just return the ones that don't fit quite right.
And remember the accessories - they're going to make or break the costume. Mr. Spock's pointy ears, a Klingon mask, a Borg helmet - whatever extras you need to make the costume complete. In some cases, you might even be able to put most of the costume together yourself, and just add a few accessories to make it just right.
